G-Star Board of Directors Congratulate White House Film Festival Winners!

The Board of Directors of the G-Star School of the Arts voted to honor the three G-Star students who won the White House Film Festival.  “We have had five G-Star students in the White House over the past two years working with or being given awards by the President of the United States,” declares Board Chairman Cindy D’Agostino.  “Board Secretary Phil DiComo suggested we honor the film festival winners.  We, the Board, all thought it was a great idea!”  The following is a reprint from the Palm Beach Film Commission State Newsletter:

G-Star Student Film Premiers at White House!

Three G-Star students were honored at the White House Film Festival. Out of 1,500 submissions, 15 Official Selections were screened touching on this year’s theme of “The Impact of Giving Back”.  Students Shaun Besman, Daniella Pereira and Julissa Perez won the Creative Luminaries Award for their short film Give It All Away. Shaun acted as writer, cinematographer, lighting designer, sound mixer and editor. Daniella wrote the narration, performed on screen, and assisted with editing. Julissa assisted with the narration and wrote and performed the title song, Give It All Away.

The students exuded excitement as they recounted their adventure in Washington
D.C. Daniella shared that the experience “was a dream”, adding that the three are best
friends and could not imagine a more rewarding experience. Shaun explained, “It was not at all what we expected. I thought it’d be a side event but we were honored and respected by many politicians, actors and filmmakers that were there to support us.” Julissa added, “Meeting the President was such a great honor. It was so inspiring to see young people giving back and hearing about all of the organizations they have created, especially since we are characterized as a generation that doesn’t care. This was an exemplary group.”

The group reminisced on their experience creating the film, which was submitted at
11:57 on an 11:59 pm deadline. It was all sparked by one of G-Star’s faculty members,
Susan Tieche, who encouraged the students to seize the special opportunity. President Obama presented the awards and emphasized his support of the “Call to Arts”, promising each festival participant that a sponsor from the American Film Institute will be assigned to them. Each student has already been contacted by the group, and they look forward to working with their new mentors. To watch their winning short film, visit:

Veterans to unveil plaque at G-Star School
Jan Engoren jengoren@tribune.com (Sun Sentinel)

Boynton Veterans' Council dedicates plaque to 52 submarines lost during World War II.  The Boynton Veterans' Council, spearheaded by its indefatigable leader Tom Kaiser, 87, a World War II veteran, will unveil a plaque dedicated to the 52 U.S. submarines lost during World War II at the G-Star School of the Arts in Palm Springs.  Titled "Still On Patrol," the plaque is a gift from the U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc. and the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II.  "Submarine veterans and their families consider those lost as 'still on patrol,'" said Kaiser, whose own brother, Robert, died on a submarine in 1944. "My brother is my hero and driving force. Whatever I do, I do for him."

The G-Star School of the Arts is a public charter high school in Palm Springs, with a focus on film, acting and television. The school features working motion pictures studio and is building a recreation of the original Victory Canteen, a 6,000-square-foot building with dining and theater seating for 400, modeled after one that sat on Worth Avenue during the 1940s.  Kaiser said he is excited that the school is making a home for veterans' memorabilia.  "The submarine men who made it through the war decided on the design of this plaque as it represents the 52 submarines lost during the war," he said.

One of the more recent submarine men is Steve Anton, 57, of Boynton Beach.  A photographer, videographer, and hyperbaric and wound care technologist, Anton served in the Navy from 1977 to 1981 and in the reserves for the first Gulf War. He spent time on a submarine from1978 to 1981.  He worked as a Navy salvage diver and in explosives ordnance disposal.  Now, a disabled veteran working to help other veterans receive the benefits they earned, Anton suffers from hearing loss, had broken bones and torn rotator cuffs, and nerve and spinal cord damage.  "I think it's great that G-Star is interested in preserving the memory and history of the veterans who served in World War II," Anton said. "Just to be able to have the memorabilia here and to have people interested in it and in preserving it, it's the real thing.  Kids get an education and are able to literally touch history," he said, giving credit to Kaiser for his efforts on behalf of veterans.  "Tom is the glue that puts it all together," Anton said. "He's an amazing force for the Veterans' Council."

Greg Hauptner, CEO of G-Star School of the Arts, said he is proud of the contributions the school is making to the veterans' community.  "Tom is a big supporter of ours and we are a big supporter of him," he said. "It's a life-changing experience when he comes and speaks to our students."  In addition to the canteen, students are working on a documentary project titled, "A Soldier's Story," to tell the stories of World War II veterans' lives, starting with 90-year old veteran Carl Arfa.  Hauptner said he hopes the documentary will air on The History Channel or The Discovery Channel.

Additionally, the school acquired a World War II-era C-47 Skytrain aircraft military transport plane that they will refurbish and display.  They are creating interactive exhibits depicting the major battles of World War II, replicas of Hollywood icons, and a museum dedicated to veterans and the Holocaust.  He wants to offer the school to veterans, Holocaust survivor organizations and the School District of Palm Beach County as a training center for Holocaust awareness.  "World War II veterans had the best of American core values, and this is what we are trying to teach our kids," Hauptner said.

World Premier of G-Star film “Student Body” Great Success!

During the school year, G-Star School of the Arts film students turn out almost 1,000 film shorts on a huge variety of subjects.  In fact, there are so many films produced that G-Star has its own film festival titled “G-Shorts”.  However, the granddaddy of them all is the annual G-Star professional student feature film.  This year the film’s title is “Student Body”, a wickedly humorous and dark film about the election of a new student body president that includes dirty tricks and murder.  The film premiered at the beautiful Borland Theater in Palm Beach Gardens this past Friday evening to a full house.  Students in tuxedos and evening gowns attended as well as their parents, families, and G-Star teachers, administrators, and staff.  Awards were given out to the over 60 cast and crew members including the principal stars, Salman Sheikh, Sara Thiboult, Bailey Cooper, James Anthony Davis, and Alexander Perry; the Director, Austin Litt; and producers Lauren Eisenstein, Sara Wohlfarth, and Adriana Codon.  A behind-the-scenes film was shown to audience directed by Jefky Zamor revealing the hard work, dedication, caring, and diligence the cast and crew took in making this fantastic film come to life.  We wish to congratulate everyone associated with the making of this film.  It is a true success!
